Yunnan is famous for its tourist attractions all over the word. Among them are some amazing places such as Xishuangbanna, the Stone Forest, the Ancient Town of Dali, Diqing highland pastures, and Lijiang ancient town which is on the list of the world cultural heritage sites. In 1998 alone, 27 million domestic and 760,000 foreign tourists visited Yunnan, and the province earned a total income of 13.5 billion yuan from the tourist sector . In order to accelerate the economic development and create a favourable environment for investment, the provincial authorities are investing huge sums of money in improving the conditions in the province. The achievements upto date are impressive.
Yunnan had post offices as early as in the late Qing Dynasty, but it was not until about 10 years ago that a modern post and telecommunication system was developed. Now advanced telecommunication technology is employed including optical cables, microwaves and satellite technology. Thanks to the rapid development of multi-media technology, the sector is providing customers with
digital, written and picture data. Cellular phones are now very popular in the province.National railway lines link Yunnan with Guiyang in Guizhou Province, Chengdu in Sichuan Province, Nanning in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guangzhou in Guangdong Province and large cities cuch as Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing. Total passenger transportation capacity has now reached 11 million people annually, and freight transport is capable of transporting 11 million tons. In highway construction, the Yunnan provincial authorities are planning to build a modern highway network which will not only cross the whole province but also connect with those of all neighboring countries. Centered in Kunming,a road network radiates outwards to Ruili, Daluo, Shuifu, Luocunkou, Hekou and Qujing. There are also first class highways linking Yunnan with Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi and Tibet. Now the highway network which has been put into use totals 100,000 kilometers, of which 1,415 kilometers is expressway, radiating out around 200 kilometers from Kunming.
Yunnan has a total of 9 airports located in Kunming,Jinghong, Mangshi, Simao, Zhaotong, Baoshan, Dali, Lijiang and Diqing. Lincang Airport will go into operation in the year 2000. Yunnan. Airlines is equipped with 19 Boeing 767-300, 737-300 and 737-700 aeroplanes, and its 99 routes serve many domestic and foreign destinations including Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Kuala Lumpur, Vientiane, Rangoon and Osaka. Kunming Airport, which has been designed for the operation of Boeing 747 and A130 planes,has recently
been upgraded and enlarged,and now has an annual capacity of more than 10 million passengers. Xishuangbanna Airport will also be extended to become the second international airport in Yunnan.
As Yunnan's investment environment improves, more and more governmental and non-governmental enterprises in other provinces and regions are seeking cooperation with Yunnan because of its advantages in natural resources and geographical location. Now Yunnan has established cooperative relations with 29 provinces and regions throughout the country, Among which those with Shanghai, Guangdong and Shandong have been established for a long time. In 1997, the inter-province economic projects carried out in Yunnan totalled 5,895 with a total investment capital 2.6 billion yuan. Yunnan also takes an active part in the "Southwest Regional Cooperation Union" working with Chongqing, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Tibet and Chengdu. Yunnan is a beautiful place full of enthusiasm.
